Brain Games are designed to help young children become great thinkers. They are taught to use thinking to solve problems, develop a passion for challenging themselves, and to strive for goals.
More specifically, Brain Games will:
- Enhance the following thinking skills:
- Serial Reasoning
- Reasoning by Analogy
- Following Directions
- Arithmetic Reasoning
- Working Memory
- Math
- Pattern Completion
- Fluid Reasoning
- Spatial Visualization
- Knowledge
- Improve focus and concentration
- Engage the concept of 'correctness'
- Encourage perseverance through medium and long term goal setting
We believe that if a child sees themselves as a thinker, they will become a thinker.
How the Process Works
- A parent or caregiver (User) must work with the child (Student).
- Progress is made via Challenges, each of which is a series of Questions. A Challenge may be either a set number of questions, or a set number of 'Stars' (correctly answered questions).
- Because rewards are central to establishing long term participation, Brain Games provides customizable Reward Systems (described below) that are critical in maintaining Student interest.
- Students start as Noob and progress through 10 levels to Supergenius, with the questions steadily getting harder.
- After each Challenge is completed, the Student profile is updated based on their results. The Student profile shows their % of progression from one level to the next as well as what they need to do to make further progress.
- Student Analysis identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the Student in the different areas of thinking.
- We recommend doing 20-40 questions, 4-7 times a week. Do not do too much at once, even if the child wants to, because it is more important to maintain long term interest. As relevant, it is not wrong to withhold the activity to build interest (reverse psychology).
- Finally, you want the child to be the one driving participation in this activity. If you have to force them, it is likely to fail.
How Rewards Works
Brain Games provides Reward Systems that are User-customizable for each Student. Rewards Systems are critical in anabling long term engagement. Here are some of the components:
- Mascot characters that give feedback after each question. Mascots make humorous and encouraging comments. Each mascot has its own image and sayings
- Each correct answer receive a Star as well as an amusing or encouraging animated image
- Mastering a question receive special Star as well as a special video
- Completing the Challenge receives a Challenge Star of a type depending on performance
We recommend connecting the achievement of Challenge Stars to offline rewards. For example, for each Challenge Stars a small 'real world' prize is won, for each 5 Challenge Stars a bigger prize is won.
Here are some important points about rewards:
- Ongoing, changing rewards are great motivators. Brain Games rewards are both predictable and random, because children will get bored if everything is predictable.
- Introduce new motivators as needed. Keep unneeded motivators in reserve, because it is likely they will be needed as some point.
- It is benefical (and educational) to have short and long term rewards
How A Challenge Works
- You start a challenge for your Student.
- Questions, and, as necessary, the response options, are read to the student.
- Ideally the student is not assisted beyond reading the question, however this is not prescriptive. When confronted with a new concept this will ordinarily require some explanation.
- More details on questions below
- Students respond and you submit the answer. Feedback and rewards (for correct answers) are given by your mascot.
- When the challenge is completed a report is generated, and the Student profile is updated.
How Questions Work
- In a Challenge, for each Question the question category is chosen at random, based on the degree of mastery of each category at the current Student Level (Unmastered categories are more likely to be chosen)
- A Question from the category is then chosen at random based on the Level that the student has attained as well as the degree of mastery of each individual question (Unmastered questions are more likely to be chosen)
- The specific content of the question is generated randomly - although the same question 'archetype' will appear repeatedly, the specific content (such as use of names, images, patterns and answer choices) changes
- Questions are usually multiple choice, with 3 or more choices, but may also be open-ended (usually requiring a single number or word).
- Questions are 'Mastered' after achieving 4 points for it, where 1 point is issued each time the Question is answered correctly and 2 points are deducted each time the Question is answered incorrectly (to a minimum of 0).
- Questions may become 'Unmastered' after answering them incorrectly
Question Types
Brain Games has 10 categories of questions, corresponding to different modes of thinking:
Serial Reasoning | A series or sequence of objects from which a missing object must be determined |
Reasoning by Analogy | A series of sets of objects, each of which is related in a certain way, leaving at least one object to be determined |
Following Directions | Follow a set of verbal directions in order to find the answer |
Arithmetic Reasoning | Text based problems requiring mathematical skill to solve |
Working Memory | Involves active transfer and recall of information in and out of the brain |
Math | Math questions with numeric answers |
Pattern Completion | Visual stimuli with missing components to be completed |
Fluid Reasoning | Tests the capacity to think logically and solve problems in novel situations |
Spatial Visualization | Tests comprehension of visual concepts such as dimensionality, rotation and transformation |
Knowledge | Basic facts about the world and society |
How Levels Work
Brain Games has 10 Student Levels:
1. | Noob | |
2. | Smarty | |
3. | Pro | |
4. | Champ | |
5. | Whiz | |
6. | Master | |
7. | Hero | |
8. | Superhero | |
9. | Genius | |
10. | Supergenius | |
A Level is Mastered, and the Student progresses to the next Level, when 3 or 50% (whichever is lesser) of Questions are
Mastered from each
Question Category.
